Balsamiq Mockups review

I've been using Balsamiq Mockups for design work for a while now and think it's great for 'mocking up' a design. It's quick and easy to document the design for either web or desktop applications.

When I get the time I do intend to write a review with more detail and some screenshots.

 

GWT 1.6 released

Google has recently released its latest incarnation of the Google Web Toolkit (GWT), version 1.6.

Key improvements include:

  • New project structure for easier deployment to Java server
  • Use of Jetty for internal Java server, rather than Tomcat
  • Multi-threaded compiler for faster compiling
  • New Event handler

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but I'll report back here once I have some experience with it.

There is a discussions section on the Google site for asking any questions and making observations.

 

Pass-through queries and DSNs

Issue

The issue I was experiencing was that we had changed the database credentials on the back-end but subsequently all of the PTQs had stopped working, complaining with a run-time error 3151 "ODBC connected to '<DSN name>' failed". What was strange was that I had confirmed that the DSN worked from the MySQL settings in the control panel.

The Joomla security team has released an update to Joomla 1.5 addressing over 60 bugs and two low-medium security issues.

 

 

GWTDesigner 5.1

The Instantiations team has released a new version of GWTDesigner (5.1) to fit in with the release of GWT 1.5.2. It runs in Eclipse 3.2 and later and provides an excellent UI layout tool for your GWT objects.

I find it very useful for setting up and viewing the UI and also copes quite well with user changes to the code. One advantage of the new version is that it automatically updates the types of RPC objects and inserts the necessary generics code for AsyncCallback.
